Chapter 28
20th May
â
May woke early as usual. She moved her legs slowly across the bed as her body began to wake until she felt a lump next to her. Leaning up, she was met with Alexanderâs gaze and a good-morning meow. She couldnât help but smile as she stretched over and patted his warm head. He closed his eyes in contentment, beginning his addictive purr before getting up from where he had slept all night and moving towards her. When he reached her, he stretched up and rubbed his head on her face before yawning.
âUrgh, Alexander, your breath stinks.â May laughed, giving him a quick stroke before moving to get up. Her guest jumped off the bed and sauntered off into the lounge. Putting her slippers on, she thought about how trusting animals were and how much humans could learn from them.
âHave you not got a home to go to, mister?â she said, walking into the lounge.
Alexander sat cleaning himself. There was a chance she was allowing an owned cat into her house, and that made her feel guilty, but the thought of that not being the case and him having no one made her feel worse.
She thought about Alex, her university friend, who loved cats. He always said that heâd never bought a cat in his life. Instead, his family had adopted about ten moggies over the years, all of them finding him and his family, homing themselves there. It was as if they knew there was a vacancy at a cat-loving house. May didnât feel she gave off the cat-hotel vibes, having never owned a pet in her almost twenty-five years on Earth. She had also heard cats were a bit psychic, but she struggled to absorb and give any remote validation to something that could be questioned around proof. Whatever it was with this cat and however much she didnât want to admit it, the skinny, little sandy boy made her happy. Maybe she could keep him for a week and try to rehome him, perhaps with Peter. She wasnât even sure if the persistent cat was homeless. Maybe she would put some posters through peopleâs doors or leave them on lamppostsâfound rather than lost posters. There were a lot of maybes.
Alexander got up and slowly made his way out of the room. As if heâd navigated her flat countless times, he sauntered into the kitchen and sat beside the fridge. He looked at her, then the fridge and meowed.
âOh my word, really?â
After feeding the expectant cat some chicken, Alexander strolled down the stairs. She followed, opening the door. He stepped out, then turned back to May as if saying thank you and goodbye, like a guest checking out of a B&B. She patted him on the head, and he meowed before going off on his travels.
She noticed the car had gone from outside of Peterâs house. She decided she would have her Weetabix and then give Peter a knock, just to check all was okay. Rushing her breakfast, she pulled on a sweater and practically jogged to Peterâs door.
